Strange Moon Records is a nonprofit label that gathers, preserves, and disseminates the music of artists affiliated with Seattle based ensemble Kin of the Moon and Los Angeles based ensemble Strange Interlude.

What's Strange Moon’s music like?

Much of Strange Moon music emerges from the headspace of improvisation-made-permanent, from an obsession with the effects of technology on human lives and minds, and from the intense joy of making music with friends.

Some of the music is the output of specific composers, while other music is the result of collaborative generative processes. Strange Moon Records features conservatory-trained instrumentalists and vocalists who have morphed into experimental, improvising, technology-wielding composers. Works tend to focus on matters of deep personal importance to their creators, with themes like the environment, feminism, ancestry, and ritual creating throughlines to the music.

How does Strange Moon work?

As a branch of the non-profit 501(c)3 Kin of the Moon, Strange Moon Records makes it easier for artists to publish original music. Through donations and sales, Strange Moon Records fronts the costs of recording, production, PR, and distribution while allowing artists to retain their own masters and rights.
