Titled “Returning,” this debut record is a reflection on mixed heritage identity, travelling in an Americana and Jazz Contemporary inspired vehicle. The name of the first track, “Tadaima,” is a Japanese phrase meaning “I’m home”. The title track "Returning" asks how to come home to who you always were, after unknowingly departing. All the tunes center around this theme, all original compositions with the exception of an arrangement of “Tailspins,” originally written by friend Wade Phillips. The piano parts and performances were greatly influenced by the work of Art Hirahara, Jacky Terrasson, and late mentor Paul Tillotson. Evan is joined on this recording by contemporaries and mentors Chris Icasiano on drums and Kelsey Mines on bass. Recorded at Lange Studios in April 2024, the day was captured on film and double exposures by friend and fellow musician Drew Martin. Album design layout, and lettering by Evan's cousin Melanie Lapovich, whose passion for Japanese calligraphy honors their shared heritage.

"Returning" Album Review:

“Evan Captain’s first Trio record does plenty to highlight Evan’s writing, arranging and piano skills. However, what really shines here is the synergy of the trio altogether. Bassist Kelsey Mines gets plenty of solo space, including on the first track “Tadaima” right off the git go. Great intonation and ideas. Drummer Chris Icasiano mixes feels and switches between brushes and sticks often throughout the recording, also providing some good solo work. The feels range from blues, ballad and backbeat to “ECM-ish” and free improvisation (or 3 way conversation). There is an urgency to Evan’s playing and compositions which I love to hear, and also a searching and explorative quality. I was engaged as a listener throughout, and hope to hear more from this trio.”
